RWU Heavy Civil team places 2nd in ASC competitiont.
CIRI-supported group is part of multi-award winning effort.
In November 2023, the Heavy Civil competition team from Roger Williams University earned second-place honors at the 34th annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region I Student Competition and Conference in Albany, NY. Supported by a travel grant from CIRI, the team is coached by Jonathan Gomes, a lecturer in the RWU Construction Management program.
“These competitions are a tremendous opportunity for networking, and give our students an experience to apply what we talk about in the classroom to create solutions to real-world problems,” Gomes says.
The six-person team was tasked with developing a plan to reconstruct a bridge over a highway, which required intricate knowledge of steel erection, structural concrete, bridge finishes and other components. To prepare for the competition, the team draws on knowledge gained through the RWU Heavy Civil curriculum along with experience gained through summer internships.
The full RWU competition team included 18 students majoring in Construction Management or Architecture, competing against 17 institutions throughout the Northeast in front of industry professionals from renowned construction firms. The Design Build and Commercial teams also took home ASC honors, coming in second and third respectively.
